For everyone new to the world of remote work, welcome to the club! As an entrepreneur who has done so for the last twenty-plus years, I can honestly say screaming children, technology glitches and distractions aside, it is a great way to earn a living.

Now that you are working from home, you have the opportunity to create a space with a view of anything that inspires you, so why not take advantage of it?

Enhance Your Productivity

How do you enhance your productivity and embrace your creativity when you live, work and play from home for days on end? Having worked as an interior designer and consultant from home, for several years, I have always found that getting into a “work routine” is the first step in becoming an efficient and effective worker bee.

The simple act of getting out of bed, making it, jumping in the shower, brushing my teeth and getting dressed (in work attire), triggers my mind and body to get into the work zone. It is especially important to create a space and place at home that is solely dedicated to work. It is the magical key to being productive, especially when you are working from home during COVID. I find that a dedicated workspace keeps me from being distracted (most of the time).

Creating Your Home Office

Creating a home office involves a little imagination and takes some planning. Start with these 5 simple steps and add your own personal flair.

5 Simple Steps To Create Your Home Office

1. THE PERFECT ROOM

Preferably, your home office should be quiet, well lit (natural light is ideal) and have enough power outlets for your computer, printer and other electronic gadgets.

2. DE-CLUTTER 

An organized work area helps enhance clarity and focus. It also makes it easier to find things like small (yet especially important) notes, or simply, your favourite pen.                                                                                  

Depending on the type of work you do, there are countless ways keep the clutter at bay. It begins with the right kind of storage. A filing cabinet is not the “chicest” choice for a home office so consider modular cabinets or statement bookcases that also fit seamlessly with the rest of your home.

3. THE IDEAL DESK/WORKSPACE

Your desk should be at the right height, where your eyes are level with the top of your computer screen, and your forearms and shoulders should be comfortable for typing.

4. THE MAGICAL CHAIR

One of the best investments you will ever make is a chair that is comfortable, supportive and ergonomically designed so you do not end up with a sore back. Your chair should allow you to comfortably rest your feet on the ground and be at the correct height to allow your arms to naturally rest on your working surface.

5. ZEN ZONE

This is your opportunity to create an inspiring and calming work oasis. Since you spend 8 or so hours in this space, your ultimate goal is to make sure your office nurtures your mind, body and soul while you work.

As a biophilic interior designer, I always bring nature inside. I highly recommend adding some indoor plants to bring the outdoors in. You want your home office to be welcoming and warm, yet comfortable and not overly distracting, so adding creature comforts, like lots of cushions and pillows for break time is also key.

The formula for working from home success, is to have a home office that is work for you by supporting your professional tasks and incorporating a healthy lifestyle — one that is easy to live in, functional and works for your needs now and in the future.

    After listening to Alive Niagara, The Red Couch Conversation with Janice, Angela and guest Andrea Leja, I learned some fantastic ideas for organizing my dining-room/office. I live in an apartment and have limited space. The storage shelving on wheels was a great Idea to keep things off the table but accessible and movable to another room when not working or guests arrive.
